I am Able

You see me on a chair with wheels,
feeling pity, wonder how it feels
to lead a life of dreary dependence
a life you feel is a forced penance.

You see just my disability
and think I wallow in self pity,
but aren't we all the same-
agile at many, at others lame?

You see me unable to see you,
darkness being my permanent view
and think I’m nothing without my cane
living a life of perpetual bane.

You see just my disability
and think I wallow in self pity,
sadly your eyes can’t see my mind
and its painted canvas one of a kind.

You see me unable to hear or speak;
a world without words you say is bleak,
never to be spoken to, never to be heard
my company you think is just absurd.

You see just my disability
and think I wallow in self pity,
but isn't it sad you need a word
to free thoughts caged like a bird?

You see just my disability
branding me a liability,
since we are all differently abled
can’t you spare me unlabelled?

  1. yes but labelling is necessary isn't it? After all the word blind implies lack of vision so it is necessary to call someone blind if he can't see....a blind person will have different requirements. Also we label and name everything - aren't you called Vidya? You have your own distinct qualities and abilities and are just not like anyone else no matter how much you want to say you are just an ordinary person.

    1. Thanks for the opinion :) by 'labelling' I was thinking more about the emtions we label them with, pity being a common one....and not the words blind, deaf or dumb...

  2. This is so true. We all have flaws, some more visible than others. Age is another disability which people pity. Yet in a mature person's mind, wisdom dances with experience.

  4. So true that labels limit people and their potential, especially those with disabilities. Thought provoking post and I enjoyed the rhythm of the poetry.
